Metabolism is the process by which your body converts food into energy. Metabolic rates vary from person to person and depend on genetics, gender, weight, and even diet. Let’s explore the three types of metabolism, how metabolism works, as well as what you can do to increase your metabolic rate.
Everyone has a metabolism, and you can likely tell someone’s metabolism by what they eat, how much they eat and how they look. We all know someone who is super skinny, but never gains weight and can eat whatever they want. We also know people who gain fat and weight very quickly, and find it much harder to lose weight - as a result, these people often watch what they eat.
These are the three types of metabolism:
Endomorph: Endomorphs are characterised by a softer, rounder body or a short, stocky build. If you gain muscle or fat quickly but find fat hard to lose, then consider yourself an endomorph. Endomorphs also have a slow metabolism. Perks of an endomorph, though? It’s easier for endomorphs to build muscle and they are often pretty strong due to carrying their own weight.
Ectomorph: People with an ectomorph metabolism tend to be smaller in frame and bone structure. They’re naturally thinner, leaner, have a fast metabolism and often find it hard to gain weight. Perks of being an ectomorph is that they can often eat whatever they want and don’t have to worry much about gaining weight (this can obviously be a problem if their goal is to put on weight.)
Mesomorph: The mesomorph usually has a rectangular-shaped body and muscular build. This type gains fat more quickly than the ectomorph, but they also have an easier time losing weight than endomorphs.
The most important factor for losing weight is metabolism. Many things can affect your metabolic rate and if you understand the basics you will be able to speed up or slow down your weight loss process with ease.
To start off, let's consider some reasons why metabolism plays such a large role in how fast or slow you lose weight, understand what affects your metabolic rate and how to use this information for easy weight loss!
Metabolism encompasses all chemical reactions in the body that convert nutrients into energy or use energy for growth, functioning and repair in the body. A person’s metabolism determines how food and drink are turned into energy for the body to use. The rate at which this happens varies from person to person, but it can be influenced by different factors, including age, gender, and genetics.
Despite your metabolic type, holistic eating is perfect for each type and can easily be integrated into any lifestyle, so the best way to stay healthy is through a holistic approach. This means you should eat foods that are good for your whole body, not just the parts of it you may be able to see in the mirror. Eating well will result in better health and energy levels, as well as improved metabolism.
A sluggish metabolism is often associated with weight gain. A slow metabolism causes the body to burn calories slower than average, leading to weight gain and obesity. By increasing your metabolic rate you will lose more weight, even if you eat the same amount as usual and work out less frequently or at a lower intensity level. There are several ways that you can increase your metabolic rate through exercise and diet changes.
One of the most common issues impacting metabolism is stress. Stress causes cortisol release, which blocks the production of thyroid hormone that helps regulate metabolism. If you're feeling stressed out it's time to take a look at what's going on in your life and figure out how to manage it so that your body can stay healthy and fit!
We live in a fast-paced world where stress is an inevitable part of life. The more we push ourselves, the bigger our to-do lists get, and it seems there's never enough time to finish everything on the list. Stress can be harmful to both our mental and physical health, so find ways to lower your stress levels. Remember that it's okay not to do everything - try delegating tasks or asking for help when you need it (even if you think you don’t need it).
Take care of yourself in a holistic manner—make sure you're eating well, exercising regularly, getting enough sleep, and taking breaks throughout the day. It's important to take care of your body as much as possible because this will help lower your stress levels by strengthening your immune system.
Getting a good night's sleep is also necessary for your health and wellness. Insufficient sleep can lead to weight gain, diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease. Getting enough restful sleep will help you stay alert throughout the day and boost your immune system by helping to fight off viruses like colds and flu.
For better quality of sleep it's important that you know what affects your sleep pattern, such as lighting, temperature or noise level, or if there is anything else in the bedroom that might be causing discomfort. You may also want to look into practicing meditation before bed and perhaps even try deep breathing exercises.
To boost your metabolism naturally and holistically you’ll want to engage the following lifestyle practices:
Work on building more muscle (strength training)
Eat more lean protein
Drink more cold water
Stand up more instead of sitting
Drink green tea or oolong tea
Eat spicy foods
Get a complete and good night’s sleep
Drink coffee
If you think your metabolism isn’t working correctly I’m happy to tell you that it’s not actually broken. It's just stuck in a rut, running on the same old program of stored fat and sugar because it doesn't know any better.
The good news is that by following the simple steps we’ve covered you can help get your body back into high gear again so you can burn calories at an optimal rate for weight loss success.
